In a shocking incident, an 18-year-old student who was on vacation in Goa was raped by a minibus driver.

The victim, who was part of a 14-member group from Mumbai that came to Goa for a Christmas party, was raped by the driver of the bus they had hired from Vasco.

Victim was alone inside the bus

On Sunday night during the Christmas party, some of them consumed alcohol and the victim started feeling uneasy and went to the bus to rest.

The bus driver, Chandrashekar Vasu Lamani, who spotted the girl alone in an inebriated state, sexually abused her.

The incident came to light after other group members returned from the party and found the victim in a disturbed state.

When one of her friends enquired, the victim revealed the entire incident, following which they filed a complaint at the Women’s Police Station.

Accused arrested

Based on the complaint, the accused was arrested and booked under Section 376 of IPC.

“The accused is a resident of Zuarinagar in Vasco. The victim was part of a group of 14 students who are on vacation in Goa and had hired the accused’s bus. The accused has been remanded in police custody for five days,” a police official said.

Hurting Goa’s tourism reputation

The incident is bringing more bad reputation to the tourist taxi operators in Goa.

Earlier this month, the Goa government initiated a probe after a group of 100 American tourists could not proceed on a sight-seeing trip as they were stopped from boarding designated buses by local taxi operators.

The tourists who arrived on the cruise ship ‘Ocean Odyssey’ had walked almost a kilometre to get to the buses, but some local taxi operators stopped them and insisted that they take their vehicles instead.

Miffed by this, the tourists returned to their ship and Ocean Odyssey threatened never to return to Goa again.

After the incident, cruise operators met CM Pramod Sawant and protested, claiming such incidents would damage the tourism-friendly image of the state and adversely affect the key sector.

Goa sees increase in tourist arrivals

After many years, Goa has witnessed a tourism boom, with an increase in domestic and international footfall.

On December 26, around 4,23,000 domestic passengers travelled in the country, breaching the pre-Covid high of 4,20,000. On December 24, the number of domestic travellers who took to flight was 4,35,500.

The number of tourists in the beach state is expected to increase in the coming days, especially for the New Year celebrations.
