October 23 saw a thriller played out between India and Pakistan in the T20 World Cup. India won by 4 wickets of the final ball and that too after having lost 4 wickets for just 31. The star of the show was of course Virat Kohli with his knock of 82 not out. It was a game worthy of being called the Mother of All Battles. Fans are now desperate for an encore and believe it or not, it could happen once more in this very tournament.

Possibilities

India and Pakistan are in the same group. So that means there is no way they can play against each other in the group stage. It also means even if they both make it to the semis, they won’t face off as one does not play one’s own group member in the semis. But, should they both win their respective semis, they will face off in the final. Now wouldn’t that be something?

ICC

Mind you, the idea is not as farfetched as it may seem. India and Pakistan have Bangladesh, South Africa, Netherlands and Zimbabwe in their group so there is every chance that the archrivals would make it to the final 4.

Precedent

It has happened. Rewind to 2007, India and Pakistan faced off in the group stage, both entered the Super 8s followed by semis and faced off in the final. India won both games and both of them went down to the wire.

India won the 2007 edition and Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in 2009 to be champions. Sri Lanka lost another final in 2012 before beating India in the 2014 title clash. Pakistan have not made it to the final since 2009.

Will it be an India vs Pakistan final on November 13? Time will tell. It’s not impossible, it remains to be seen if it actually happens.
