On Sunday, April 23 Pino won third place out of 200 finalists for his movie documentary titled “Tim” at FilmNow: A regional high school film festival at the historic Ambler Theatre in PA.

Pino was studying American Film Studies in school and at the end of the semester, he was tasked with making a documentary.

“I chose to do a documentary on my dad and on his career and accomplishments and achievements,” said Pino.

Pino’s father Tim is a nationally recognized Police K9 Handler and is currently an Undersheriff for Somerset County. He was the inspiration behind “Dano’s Law” which protects law enforcement animals and the families they live with after a local drug dealer threatened to kill his K9 partner Dano in 2008.

Pino did research on his father, interviewed him, and then began writing the script and filming.

“I was really excited about the idea and really happy about it,” said Pino.

The documentary was a true family affair as Pino’s sister also helped with filming a bit.

Once Pino presented it to his class his film teachers Chris Black and Keith Shapiro pulled him to the side.

“They said, ‘This is really good. You should try to submit this to a couple of film festivals’,” said Pino. “I said, ‘Let’s see what happens’ since I never did anything like that before.”

To Pino’s surprise, he was awarded third place.

“I was really excited,” said Pino of the award.

Pino, who has committed to Montclair State University, will have to wait a few additional months to start working on his Film and Editing Major as he enlisted in the United States Army National Guard last year and will be fulfilling his military commitment after high school graduation before attending college.

Longterm, Pino is hoping to have a career in film but more behind the scenes such as video editing.
