ENFIELD, CT — Today’s installment of this periodic Enfield history series, courtesy of the Enfield Historical Society, centers on a longtime financial institution in town: the Enfield Federal Savings and Loan Association at 660 Enfield Street.

Founded in 1916, the bank building shown above was constructed in 1958, according to town property records. In 1960, a young high school graduate named Jack Toolan began working there part time as a teller; he eventually rose through the ranks and became bank president in 1974. He retired in 1999.

Enfield Federal eventually had three offices in Enfield and a branch in Suffield. In the early days of cable TV in Enfield in the mid-1980s (remember Continental Cablevision?), Toolan was often seen in commercials for the bank.

The bank eventually moved its headquarters up the road to 855 Enfield Street, the current site of M&T Bank. In its place at 660 Enfield in 2007 came Rockville Bank, which operated there until closing that branch in 2013.

A guns and ammunition store named A Call to Arms moved into the building in 2017, but closed following the owner’s death a year and a half later. In 2022, Mane Habitat, a hair and beauty salon, moved from its Hazardville location to 660 Enfield.
