The biggest major crime drops in the neighborhood were found in robbery (-34.8 percent), burglary (-42.9), grand larceny (-8.9) and murder (-100).

While those numbers contributed to an overall drop in that overall major crimes number, some still posted concerning numbers.

For example, felony assaults increased from 17 in June 2022 to 21 this year, a 23.5 percent jump. Overall, felony assaults are up by 11 — from 89 to 100 — so far this year, or 12.5 percent.

And transit crimes — not included in the major crimes statistics — are up from three in June 2022 to nine this year, with a year-to-date jump from 21 to 28 — a 33 percent increase.

Still, other, smaller crimes reflected an overall decline, like a 25 percent drop in petty theft and a 15 percent drop in misdemeanor assault.

So far this year, major crimes are down by one-and-a-half percent in the Upper East Side — a better sign than the city-at-large, which had a minor bump up of half-a-percent overall.

The declines in crime match up with reported nationwide drops — especially in violent crimes — but overall rates are still above pre-pandemic levels. And higher crime, no matter what statistical time period it is compared to, leaves many on edge across the city.

For the Upper East Side, crime is still on average nearly 40 percent higher than it was in 2010.

But in 2022, despite the uptick, the Upper East Side still reported 30 percent fewer crimes than 2001.

And of course, crime statistics last year were over 80 percent lower than 1990.
