TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Tuscaloosa County Commission on Wednesday approved an allocation of $225,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to go toward the construction of a new affordable housing development for seniors in Holt.

The site for the proposed development is large, completely vacant tract of land located at 4220 Keene Drive. The goal of the residential project is to provide adequate and, most importantly, affordable, housing for senior citizens in Tuscaloosa County.

While the funds will certainly help advance the project, the project manager estimates the total cost to be approximately $15 million. The funding approved by the County Commission on Wednesday is contingent upon the nonprofit receiving state grant funding.

As part of the effort, the county is partnering with Southeast Affordable Housing Corp., with plans to work with a local developer on the residential development once the necessary funding is secured.

During Wednesday’s regular meeting of the Tuscaloosa County Commission, the project manager said the nonprofit is currently working to get $2.4 million in state grant funding, in addition to seeking $1.5 million in tax credits.

In total, the new senior living development would consist of between 44 and 48 units, each with two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The development will also feature an on-site resident manager and on-site maintenance.

In terms of a timetable for grant funding from the state, the project manager and the county expect to have an answer in the next six months.
