TOMS RIVER, NJ — One person was taken to the hospital Monday evening after a pair of crashes on the Garden State Parkway that left a pickup truck on its roof and tied up traffic during the evening rush hour.

The first crash was reported at 4:48 p.m. in the northbound lanes near milepost 82, New Jersey State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron said Tuesday.

The driver of a Cadillac lost control and hit the side of a Ford pickup truck, Lebron said. The impact caused the Ford pickup hit a guardrail, he said. One of its wheels snapped off and was a short distance behind where the pickup truck came to a rest.

The Cadillac ended up sideways in the far left lane with significant damage to its front end.

The driver of the Cadillac suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital, Lebron said.

That crash, reported at 4:56 p.m., involved a BMW SUV, a Mitsubishi car and a Nissan pickup truck. The Nissan wound up on its roof as a result of that crash, but Lebron said there were no injuries reported.

Traffic was backed up for more than a mile in both directions as vehicles crawled past the two crashes.

Lebron said both crashes remain under investigation and no additional information was available Tuesday.
