HYDE PARK, NY — Besides taking care of hundreds of animals every day, the Dutchess County SPCA also has mountains of laundry to do as well — a job made more complicated by not having a commercial-size washer and dryer.
The no-kill shelter put out a call on Facebook for the community to step up and provide some residential washers and dryers in good condition to tide them over until the organization is able to purchase commercial units.

The animals waiting to be adopted go through a lot of sheets, blankets and comforters and the no-kill shelter doesn’t want to have to put them in the trash if at all possible, according to Lynne Meloccaro, the shelter’s executive director.

“It’s an important aspect to our care of the animals that they be clean and comfortable,” she said in an email. “The linens we use are all donated by our supportive community, and sheets, blankets and comforters can get pretty disgusting quickly when they are keeping a dog or cat cozy.”
Meloccaro said, if the bedding is not too soiled but is merely dirty with fur or drool, it’s sanitized in the wash and re-used for as long as it can last.

“With 100+ animals in our care, you can imagine our laundry needs,” she said.
The SPCA is in the process of looking for used commercial machines, but until then it’s asking the community if they can donate some residential washers and dryers in good condition.
If anyone has old equipment they want to get rid of or has leads on where the organization can find replacement appliances, they should email the development director.
