SAN PEDRO, CA — A Terminal Island worker died Monday morning after becoming trapped underneath a forklift at the Port of Los Angeles on Terminal Island.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the worker to become trapped. Los Angeles firefighters were called t to Berth 270 shortly after 10:30 a.m., according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange.

“Firefighters received reports of a worker trapped under a forklift. Upon arrival, firefighters found the trapped person to be deceased,” Prange said in a written statement. “Urban Search and Rescue specialists will continue their response to assist with safely removing the heavy machinery from the site, to allow other agencies — CalOSHA, law enforcement and the medical examiner — to conduct their investigation.”

Authorities did not publicly identify the worker killed.
