JOLIET, IL — Will County Judge Donald DeWilkins has denied pretrial release for Imer Resumovic, a 37-year-old man accused of wearing all black, a tactical-style police vest, “claiming to be police” and holding a man at gunpoint inside a Joliet house on the city’s near west side. Joliet police found two bullets holes inside the kitchen in the 600 block of Cowles Avenue.
This week’s Joliet police arrest resulted in two charges of home invasion and two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.
According to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office petition to deny pretrial release, a 39-year-old unemployed military veteran owns and lives at the house on Cowles. One man who is an acquaintance stays in the basement, and a second man rented one of their spare bedrooms until being kicked out for fraudulent identity activity, court records indicate.

Around 5 a.m. on Monday, a man wearing a black hoodie entered their house, yelled “police” and threw the property owner to the floor after he was sleeping on his couch. Another person who was staying there the past few days heard cries of “police” and saw one of the four suspects, identified as Resumovic, follow him into the backyard and ordered him back inside.
“He could tell this suspect was a fake cop, wearing cop-like clothing,” Will County prosecutor Frank Byers informed the judge.

Back inside, the victim lunged at the defendant, and Resumovic’s gun went off. At that point, the victim grabbed the gun and hit Resumovic several times in the head, court documents show.
“We note here that this defendant did have head injuries consistent with this,” Byers outlined. The victim kept the defendant’s 9mm Sig Sauer semi-automatic pistol and put it under a mattress until Joliet police arrived, court records indicate.
Although Resumovic managed to break free and escape, Joliet police captured him a few houses down the street, hiding underneath an SUV, according to the petition.
Resumovic was wearing all black, a tactical vest, and he had an empty gun holster on his waistband, prosecutors noted.
“At least one of the four offenders ran past Joliet officers shortly after their arrival, and with their not being sure who it was, got away,” Byers informed the judge. “Additional police work has promising potential to identify at least two of the other remaining three offenders.”
A neighbor who sleeps with a window open heard someone yell, “I’m going to shoot you.”
After his arrest, Resumovic told Joliet police he knew the people who lived at the house on Cowles “and they were just doing drugs.”
According to Will County prosecutors, Resumovic was already free on pretrial release out of Chicago, where he has nine pending charges. Resumovic also has a 2021 burglary conviction out of Cook County.
“Defendant is alleged to have been carrying 97 pieces of mail, not his own, and a counterfeit U.S. Postal Service master key when Chicago police stopped him for a warrant investigation there on January 12. Between proceeds recovered there, the eight newer Cook County cases were charged,” according to Byers.
