ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL — It’s been a difficult few weeks for the family of Elk Grove Village resident Eduardo Rivera, Jr. The 45-year-old, along with two friends, had gone missing after jumping into Lake Michigan on July 5 in northwest Indiana. Sadly, the bodies of Rivera, Jr., and Salvador Lopez, 32, also of Elk Grove Village, were recovered last Friday.
A third man, who was wearing a life jacket, was rescued by the Coast Guard, reports Associated Press.
Now Rivera’s younger sister, Ana Zaldana, has started a GoFundMe to help raise money for funeral services. As of Tuesday afternoon, the campaign has raised over $1,000 of a $10,000 goal.

Zaldana said her brother had gone boating with family and friends, “like he usually does whenever he gets a chance.” Lopez had jumped into Lake Michigan, but couldn’t get back to the boat due to strong winds and currents. Rivera and the third friend jumped in to save Lopez, but Rivera died trying to save his friend.

“We are devastated by the loss of my brother and are in need of help to cover his funeral services,” said Zaldana, who says she’s been staying at a Chicago hotel with her mother since the search began. “Any donations, big or small, would mean the world to us during this difficult time. Thank you for your kindness and support.”
