FARMINGTON, CT — The town’s top elected body last week honored one of the town’s top Girl Scouts by declaring a day in her honor for her work promoting bicycle safety in town.

The Farmington Town Council unanimously voted to declare July 10 as “Lily Picard Day” in Farmington for longtime efforts that garnered her Girl Scouting’s top honor.

Picard graduated from Farmington High School last month and for her work, she earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the Girl Scout equivalent to becoming an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts.

• Planning and hosting a “bike rodeo” in partnership with Bike Walk Farmington CT and the town’s recreation department.

That event featured nine stations where participants had bike/helmet safety checks, learned safety skills, and engaged in road simulations.

• Designing and building an “artistic bike rack” at the Farmington Police Department and Community Center.

• Advocating for a bike safety curriculum in Farmington’s elementary and middle schools, doing so by working with physical education teachers.

• Served on a Bike Walk Farmington CT subcommittee that applied for and earned the town a 2024 “Bicycle Friendly Community” designation.

In addition to excelling in Girl Scouts, Picard was a member of the National Honor Society and Math Honor Society and played on FHS’ basketball team and rowed crew.

Later this summer, she will journey to Washington, D.C., to attend American University.

“As a result of Lilyl Picard’s work, the lives of the people of Farmington will be enriched and enhanced by these initiatives while enjoying bicycling safety throughout town,” reads the approved resolution.
