LACEY, NJ — A property in Lacey housing two historic buildings could become a convenience store and gas station, if approved by the Zoning Board.

101 North Main St. houses the Worden House and the former community center. It was sold last year in a bid that was voided due to a “clerical error.” However, it was then re-listed and sold on May 10, records show.

Now, the owner of the property is seeking a conditional use variance to construct a convenience store and gas station, according to public notice.

The applicant is seeking several variances, including 49 parking spots where 57 are required.

Philanthropist Charles A. Smith had left the property to the township in his will 100 years ago for the express purpose of building a community center. The Byrd Worden House, built 1863, is named for one of the oldest families in the community, dating back to the beginning of Lacey. The home was once in a different location and was moved to its current spot in the 1980s.

Township officials previously indicated that the owner of the property could tear down these buildings. Public notice for the proposed construction gives no indication on what would become of the existing buildings on the property.
