NORTHBROOK, IL — Helping others is important to Wood Oaks Junior High School, especially through the Northbrook school’s “Wildcats Care” initiative. This was evident recently when students began creating get-well cards for Chloe, the Northbrook Police Department’s K9 therapy dog, who recently began receiving treatment for a malignant mast cell tumor.

“This activity was just a starting point for how our school wants to continue to help others inside our building, in our local community, and in the broader community,” Wood Oaks Principal Cari Beake tells Patch. “We hope our theme of ‘Wildcats Care’ becomes something we can continue beyond just this school year.”
As Patch reported earlier this month, Chloe, who became the police department’s first therapy dog in 2021, is out of service for four to six weeks due to the tumor and subsequent treatment. NPD reached out to the community seeking get-well cards for its canine friends.

The Wood Oaks students worked on their heartfelt cards during homeroom on Thursday, according to Northbrook School District 27, hoping the messages of support “bring her comfort and strength.”

“One of our goals this year is to build a sense of community and consider how we help others,” Beake said. “Students who have pets, who have friends or relatives who have been ill, or who have been ill themselves understand the comfort that can be given just by knowing someone was thinking enough about them to share well wishes.”
According to the district, Chloe welcomed students on the first day of school last year and students, staff and administration alike say they miss her.
