NORTHBROOK, IL — The Northbrook community is mourning the loss of Mark Damisch, who served in a number of roles for the Village, including president from 1993 to 2005. Damisch, 68, died last Friday following a four-year battle with metastatic colon adenocarcinoma.

“He will be remembered not only for his contributions to our Village, but also for his warmth, kindness, and passion for making a difference,” the Village of Northbrook said in a Tuesday social media post. “Our thoughts are with his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Mark’s legacy will continue to inspire us for generations to come.”

According to his obituary, Damisch, who was born in Lake Forest and grew up in Northfield, died on his 43rd wedding anniversary to his wife, Patricia. He also leaves behind three daughters, three grandchildren, and a number of other family members.

Officials described Damisch as a “dedicated leader” and “tireless advocate” for the community. During his tenure as Village President, Damisch is credited for presiding over many accomplishments, including the Village earning a triple-A bond rating and the establishment of the Village’s Arts Commission and the Economic Development Commission.

Damisch was an attorney for four decades, working for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office and then the U.S. Attorney’s office, before moving to private practice.

Damisch was also a concert pianist, learning to play at an early age, and touring throughout his life. According to his obituary, Damisch continued to play free classical piano concerts in over 60 countries until the month before his death.

Visitation is planned from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at N.H. Scott Funeral Home, 1240 Waukegan Road, Glenview. A Funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, at Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 1401 Wagner Road, Glenview, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 1401 Wagner Road, Glenview, IL 60025.
