AMAGANSETT, NY — A deceased humpback whale was found in the surf near Napeague State Park in Amagansett.
According to the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, or AMSEAS, the group has been working with the East Hampton Police Department’s marine patrol, New York State Parks Department, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and NOAA Fisheries; the team has been monitoring the whale’s location and planning for an examination and removal from the beach.
On Thursday, AMSEAS said the whale was still in the surf.

“AMSEAS and our partners have been working around the clock to coordinate efforts and resources needed to conduct an examination of this animal to determine its potential cause of death and proper disposal of the remains,” the group said.
The site has been monitored for public safety.

“We will provide additional updates as they become available,” AMSEAS said.
Residents are urge to report sightings of sick, injured, entangled, or deceased whales, dolphins, seals and sea turtles to the NYS Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding Hotline at 631-369-9829.
AMSEAS added that there is an ongoing investigation into the sharp uptick in humpback whale deaths since 2016.
