LAKE COUNTY, IL — The 47-year-old Wauconda man fatally shot by police over the weekend was mad that the woman he was seeing was spending time with a different man Sunday night when he threw a golf club at a him and damaged his car, authorities said Wednesday.
The man, who has been identified as Israel Contreras-Madagan, died of multiple gunshot wounds after police say he wielded a knife and lunged at officers who’d come to arrest him at about 11:10 p.m. Sunday.
Christopher Covelli, public information officer for the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, said prior to police arriving, Contreras-Madagan went to the home of the man in the 0 to 100 block of Howard Avenue in Fox Lake, which was down the street from the woman he was seeing. He damaged the man’s car, threw a golf club at him and struck the man’s vehicle with his own vehicle, Covelli said.

He then went back to the house of the 43-year-old woman, according to police.
The man called police to report the incident, and when police arrived to arrest him, Contreras-Madagan pulled a knife out of his pocket, police said. Officers ordered him to drop the knife, but he instead lunged at them, according to authorities.

Two Fox Lake Police Department officers fired at Contreras-Madagan, who was shot and collapsed. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the news release.
The 43-year-old woman was hit in the leg by one of the rounds fired by officers, according to the news release. Officers provided aid to her, and she was taken to an area hospital for treatment and was expected to recover.
The Lake County Major Crime Task Force will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting and turn its findings over to the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors will then determine if charges will be filed, authorities said.
